A worn track rod end, the centre rear seat belt sticking and the SRS light staying on. I wasn't aware the SRS light was an MOT issue, but I think I know where the problem lies and it shouldn't be too bad to fix.

This morning we took the 71 GT to meet friends for coffee & chat. A great morning with a good turn out of cars. This afternoon was the MOT for the ZR. Not good, it failed, but thankfully nothing too serious.

The 71 MGB GT is back on the road after nearly 3 months. This wasn't a restoration but a tidy up of what was a scruffy driver. It was only supposed to be a new coat of paint but a bit of mission creep set in.
It felt strange driving it after so long, but by the time I'd driven the couple of miles for fuel it felt like I'd never been out of it. There are still a few things to do but as the TA needs attention they will have to wait. I'm still undecided about putting the Oscars back on. Spring is supposed to be here and Summer follows Spring so the logic is inescapable. It's a pity the weather doesn't know that.
While the BGT is sat waiting for the welder to work his magic (I wish he'd get on with it) I managed to get some work done on old Numbum. Found and fixed a pinhole leak on the cooling system, adjusted the brakes, cleaned the plugs and points and checked the carburetors. It now fires up and runs sweetly. Last year I bought some heated seat pads and I finally got round to doing something with them. I wired two relays through a switch from an ignition controlled source so I can't leave them on. The passenger seat pad is fitted and wired up to the relay. Just the drivers to do now, but it's gone quite cold again so that will have to wait. In preparation for the delayed trip to the body shop, I spent some time removing the bumpers from the 1971 MGB GT.
As it's my daily driver I have to keep it legal so I had to find a way of re-attaching the front number plate and making up rear number plate lights to replace the ones on the overriders. Just a short drive in the snow. The microphone is pretty sensitive and the roaring sound is the blower fan. Maybe locating the cam just above the vent wasn't a good idea. The MGB GT passed its MOT today with only an advisory on slight brake imbalance on the front. Once the snow goes and the temperature increases, I'll sort that out.
A cold Sunday morning saw 6 cars meet up at the car park at the top of Birk Brow for the drive to Whitby. Ours was the only MG. Shame on the rest of you! After a drive along the mostly snow free A171 we arrived in Whitby. After a brisk walk in bitterly cold winds, we took refuge in a pub for coffee. Next was the main reason for the trip. Just around the corner we were soon tucking into this. Before - After As the temperature wasn't getting any better we decided not to hang about and we headed back to the car for the return journey. Despite the weather it was a good day out in great company.
I've decide to go bumperless on the 71 GT and I ordered front & rear Sebring valences.
They arrived today. Slowly things are coming together and hopefully it will be in the body shop before the end of the month. We didn't manage the organised run but joined up with friends for lunch at the Squinting Cat, near Harrogate. There were some very cold bodies returning from the run. Whilst we were eating I was visited by one of the directors of the MG Car Club, who had seen the 1971 MGB GT in the car park and recognised it from this site. It's good to meet readers and gratifying when they enjoy reading about what we do. On a slightly sadder note, today looks like being the end of an era. Our grandchildren love travelling in the back of the GT and we love having them with us, but they are growing taller and I think this will be their last trip. As we were leaving the two brave souls in the Hupmobile were firing it up. Pam decided to do an impromptu video as we followed them down the road. A bittersweet moment as I watched it drive away. My wife loved driving it but we had more cars than needed and it gives some funds to work on the 1971.

AuthorHi, I'm Owen and I've been having fun with MGs since 1970, starting with my 1937 MGTA. Since then I've had three Y types and a couple of Z Magnettes. I now have a 1971 MGB GT along with the TA and my wife and I are still having fun Archives
